A Study in Scarlet was the first of the Sherlock Holmes stories, written by Conan Doyle during his quieter moments in Southsea . It was first published i n Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887, and Doyle received the princely sum of £25 for his efforts. We are introduced to Holmes and Watson, to Holmes’ profession, and to some supporting characters such as Lestrade, Gregson and the Baker Street Irregulars.
